Those exquisite home designs are breathtakingly beautiful, but those furniture prices that run into tens of thousands are equally breathtaking...
However, after years of exploration, I've finally found a way to both save money and make my home look amazing! As an experienced "home expert" who has moved rentals numerous times and renovated 3 times, today I'm going to share a super practical makeover guide that will help you create the coziest home with minimal spending.
Treasure Hunting
I still remember my first experience treasure hunting at the second-hand market - it made me scream with excitement! It was an especially bright weekend morning when I got up early to head to the largest second-hand market nearby. Right at the entrance, I was drawn to a vintage solid wood dining table. Though the surface showed some signs of age, the overall structure was very sturdy, and the most exciting part was the price - only 300 yuan!
At that moment, countless possibilities were already floating in my mind. After getting home, I immediately started my renovation plan: first carefully sanded away the surface scratches, then chose a dark brown wood paint to recolor it. Finally, I added some vintage iron decorations to the table legs. Now this table has become an Instagram-worthy spot in my home - friends take photos for their social media every time they visit. Who could imagine this was actually a second-hand find?
Speaking of second-hand markets, it's truly the ultimate treasure hunting game! I've found that 8-10 AM on weekends is the prime hunting time, as many vendors put out their new goods during this time. Especially the special markets on the first weekend of each month - it's absolutely a paradise for treasure hunters.
Just the other day I found an amazing set of rattan chairs for only 200 yuan! Though slightly used, the structure was excellent. I carefully cleaned the chairs with water, sprayed them with preservative, and finally painted them with a creamy white color. Now my balcony instantly has that boutique café vibe!
IKEA Hacks
Speaking of IKEA, it's truly my favorite! I remember buying a BILLY bookcase last year for just 499 yuan. But after my makeover, friends thought it was a custom piece worth thousands! Want to know how I did it?
First, I secured the bookcase to the wall, which made it look more substantial. Then I added a wooden decorative trim on top, which you can buy cheaply from hardware markets. The sides were also finished with wooden strips, making it look like custom-built furniture. Finally, I chose a matte white paint with fine texture and applied about three coats. This transformed bookcase now looks exactly like high-end custom furniture!
There's also my BRUSALI chest of drawers - I added rattan panels to the original plain white cabinet doors, instantly creating a resort-style feel. The rattan panels were bought online for just 30 yuan each, but the effect is amazing!
Recently I'm planning to renovate my PAX wardrobe, thinking of replacing the ordinary sliding doors with art glass doors. I found a nice glass customization store on Taobao with very reasonable prices. Once the renovation is complete, my dressing room will have a glamorous transformation!
Creative DIY
Speaking of my proudest renovation, I must mention the mountain landscape mural in my bedroom! At the time, I was worried about my bedroom wall, thinking plain white was too boring but wallpaper was too expensive. Suddenly inspiration struck - why not paint it myself?
I immediately went to the hardware store and bought several small test cans of wall paint, spending only 100 yuan total. After returning home, I first painted a light gray base coat on the wall, then used different shades of gray to create mountain contours with a gradient effect. The most magical part was that by using a misty technique, the whole scene had a dreamy quality which actually covered up my technical limitations. Now this wall has become the most eye-catching decoration in my bedroom, and seeing such scenery every morning puts me in a great mood.
Many friends think I must have studied art, but I actually haven't at all! I just found some tutorials online and took the plunge. To be honest, my hands were shaking when I first started painting, afraid of messing it up. But later I realized, even if it didn't look good, I could always repaint it white and start over. It was this relaxed attitude that actually allowed me to express myself freely.
Besides the mural, I also created a photo wall in the living room. I found frames of different sizes, spray painted them all white, then mounted travel photos and art postcards. This wall is now not just decoration, but carries many beautiful memories.
Creating Ambiance
When it comes to home ambiance, lighting is absolutely crucial! I remember when I first moved into my new home, there was only one big chandelier, and the whole room was either very bright or completely dark, with no layering. After researching lighting design, I discovered light could be played with in so many ways!
In the living room, I chose a dimmable floor lamp that can be bright as main lighting during the day and dimmed for ambiance at night. I bought this lamp from an e-commerce platform during the Singles' Day sale for only 299 yuan. I installed motion sensor night lights in the hallway, so I don't have to fumble in the dark for bathroom trips at night, and they're very energy-efficient. In the bedroom, I installed two wall sconces that provide very soft light, perfect for reading at night.
What I'm most proud of is the balcony lighting design. I wrapped a string of small lights around the balcony railing, and when they light up at night, the whole balcony becomes like a fairy tale world. These lights are solar-powered, charging automatically during the day and lighting up at night, using no electricity at all.
Storage Solutions
Storage is always a big issue, especially for small apartments. But after years of exploration, I've really found many amazing storage solutions!
The most successful was the kitchen renovation. Originally, there was about 40cm of wasted space between the top of the wall cabinets and the ceiling. I had a carpenter custom-make extension boards all around, creating additional storage space. This renovation directly increased my kitchen storage space by 40%! Now I have places to store snacks and less frequently used kitchen utensils.
Wardrobe storage is also a focus. I bought many vacuum storage bags to compress seasonal clothing, which not only saves space but also prevents moths and moisture. Then I installed layered storage boxes in the closet, so small items like socks and underwear don't become a mess.
I've also fully utilized the space under the bed. I bought several flat storage boxes with wheels that can be easily pulled out. These boxes store spare bedding and less frequently used shoes. Most importantly, these storage boxes are transparent, so I can see what's inside at a glance.
Finishing Touches
Home decoration is all about the details. I remember finding several vases at the second-hand market with nice shapes but old colors, selling for just 5 yuan each. I bought a can of matte white paint and spray painted all these vases pure white. Then I bought some dried flowers online and arranged them in these vases, instantly creating that Nordic style!
I also particularly enjoy collecting interesting small items. Like an old camera I found at the flea market - though it no longer works, it looks very vintage on the bookshelf. And some old books, which I arrange spine-out, creating a unique visual line.
Recently I've become fascinated with hand-knitted pillowcases. I bought some yarn online and learned to knit from videos. Although my first creation was a bit crooked, it actually looks charmingly handmade when placed on the sofa, making it more special.
Conclusion
Honestly, renovating a home isn't an easy task. You'll encounter all kinds of difficulties, and sometimes the results might not be exactly what you envisioned. But it's this process that makes my home unique. Every piece of furniture, every decoration has a story and carries my intentions.
Most importantly, through these renovations, I've understood one truth: a home isn't built with money, but with heart. Even with a limited budget, we can use our own hands and creativity to turn our home into a warm and comfortable haven.
